Called Out of Comfort
"Jesus said to him, ‘Follow me.’ And leaving everything, he rose and followed him." – Luke 5:27-28
Comfort is not always sinful, but it is always limiting. It keeps you warm and still. It lulls you into inaction. And if you are not careful, comfort will become your master, not your reward. God is not in the business of building soft lives. He is building strong people. That often starts with breaking you out of whatever makes you feel most secure.
When Jesus called His disciples, He did not offer them a five-year plan or the promise of an easier life. He gave them two words: "Follow me." That invitation pulled them out of the boats they had known, the jobs they had mastered, and the routines they had come to rely on. It pulled them out of comfort. Because where God leads, comfort is not the point. Growth is.
God rarely does His deepest work in the shallow end. He calls you into deep waters. Not because He wants to drown you, but because that is where your faith learns to swim. The danger of comfort is that it tricks you into believing you have control. But the call of Christ is always one that demands surrender. He strips away the illusion of self-sufficiency so He can show you what real strength looks like. And it never comes from comfort. It comes from Him.
The reason God pulls you out of comfort is not to punish you, but to prepare you. Comfort is fine for a season. But when it becomes your identity, your motivation, or your excuse, it turns toxic. The longer you stay in a comfort zone, the smaller your world becomes. Eventually, the very thing that gave you peace will start to feel like a prison. You were made to move.
Jesus never said, “Stay here and be safe.” He said, “Take up your cross and follow me.” You will not find destiny in the easy places. You will find it on the other side of the unknown. You will find it when you say yes to God, even when every part of you wants to stay put.
Comfort never changed the world. Obedience does. The question is not whether God is calling. It is whether you are willing to leave what feels good to step into what God has for your life.
