Take Inventory of Where You Are Emotionally
"Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves." - 2 Corinthians 13:5
If you’ve ever started a fitness program, you know that the first thing the trainer does is take measurements, weigh you, and ask what your goals are. It’s all part of creating a baseline, a way to assess where you are so you can figure out how to improve.
In the same way, we need to take an emotional inventory. Where are you right now? Is anger an issue you need to work on? How about sadness? Are you still carrying fear from past trauma, or is resentment taking root in your heart? These are important questions that help you gauge where you are on the emotional spectrum.
Whether you realize it or not, your emotional state influences how you show up in various situations. Maybe you blew up at a coworker, not because of something they did, but because of unresolved anger beneath the surface. Or perhaps you withdrew during a conflict because sadness and fear were already weighing on you. What’s happening inside of you often spills over into your daily interactions, and it’s crucial to be aware of that.
Think about your car for a moment. When the engine light comes on, it’s a signal that something is wrong under the hood. If you ignore it, you’re asking for trouble. The same is true for your emotional well-being. When anger, fear, or sadness pop up, they’re like warning lights flashing on the dashboard of your life. They’re telling you that something needs attention.
God wants to come alongside you in these moments. He doesn’t want you to ignore those signals. When the anger light flashes or the anxiety light starts blinking, don’t keep going as if everything is fine. Stop and take a look under the hood. What’s going on inside? What’s driving those emotions?
Remember, those emotional signals are there for a reason. They’re telling you that something needs healing, that there’s an area in your life where you need God’s support. So don’t ignore the light. Pay attention to what’s happening beneath the surface and let God minister to the areas that need it most.
Take the time to look under the hood. You’ll find that emotional health leads to greater spiritual growth.
