Led by the Spirit
"For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God." - Romans 8:14
The story of Simeon is a remarkable example of a man led by the Spirit. His life reflects a profound truth, that the Holy Spirit plays an essential role in sustaining us until we see the manifestation of God's revelation.
Three times in these verses, it is emphasized that Simeon was guided by the Spirit. The Spirit was upon him, within him, and went before him. Everything he did in life and in this narrative was empowered by the Holy Spirit. Simeon's life illustrates the profound significance of the Spirit's presence and leading in the life of a believer.
Firstly, we see that the Spirit enabled Simeon to wait. His patient anticipation of God's promise was sustained by the Holy Spirit. Waiting can be challenging, but with the Spirit's presence upon us, we find the strength to endure and persevere in faith.
Secondly, the Spirit revealed the promise to Simeon. The Holy Spirit illuminated God's plan, allowing Simeon to recognize the infant Jesus as the fulfillment of the promise. This reveals the Spirit's role in helping us discern God's will and recognize His work in our lives.
Lastly, the Spirit led Simeon into the temple. Being led by the Spirit means yielding to His guidance and allowing Him to direct our steps. The Spirit went before Simeon, leading him to the exact moment when he would encounter the Messiah. Being led by the Spirit is not a passive act but an active obedience to God's leading.
Being led by the Spirit is important in the life of a believer. Romans 8:14 tells us that those led by the Spirit are the children of God. It signifies our intimate relationship with the Father, for the Spirit leads us in the paths of righteousness, revealing God's will, comforting us in our trials, and empowering us to live out our faith.
The Spirit's presence upon us, within us, and leading us is a continuous source of strength, wisdom, and revelation. It guides us in our decision-making, empowers us to live according to God's Word, and reveals His promises to us. Just as the Spirit sustained Simeon until he witnessed the manifestation of God's revelation, the Spirit sustains us in our journey of faith.
