Guard Your Heart
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” - Philippians 4:6-7
If you have been following along with us the last few days, you know we have been looking at the Apostle Paul’s instructions in Philippians 4:6-7.
These verses are important to anyone who has or is going through difficult life circumstances. The fact is, everyone is either coming out of, in the midst of, or going into a storm. Life is filled with mountain highs and valley lows. It is easy to go through life from the mountain top. But what about when we find ourselves in the valley lows?
That is what Paul is talking about in these two verses. At the end of verse 7, he talks about a peace that surpasses all understanding. And that peace “will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Have you ever heard that phrase, “guard your heart?” Typically, it is something parents or grandparents instruct young people to do when it comes to dating relationships. They want them to guard their hearts and not just give them to anyone.
But what this verse is telling us is that God guards our hearts. This means that God is on your side! Sometimes when life hits hard and we are in the valleys, especially for a long period of time, we can begin to believe the enemy's lies. And we can start to think that God isn’t for us or isn’t really that interested in getting us out.
But the truth is, God is not only working in your circumstances, but He wants to give you a peace that surpasses the understanding of the storms taking place in your life. And that is a peace that guards your heart!
If your heart is hurting today, pray to God! Ask Him to give you the peace that surpasses all understanding, and in doing so, to guard your heart in the midst of the storm.
