Finishing Well
"Let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith." - Hebrews 12:1–2
The Christian life is described as a race that requires endurance, strategy, and focus on the goal. Wisdom helps us pace ourselves for the long journey, knowing when to sprint and when to maintain steady progress, when to rest and when to push through difficulties.
Perseverance is not simply gritting our teeth and enduring hardship; it's maintaining faithful obedience to God's calling despite obstacles and setbacks. This requires wisdom to discern between temporary difficulties that we should endure and harmful situations that we should address or escape.
Looking to Jesus as our example provides both inspiration and instruction for perseverance. He faced opposition, misunderstanding, and suffering but remained focused on His mission to bring salvation to the world. His example shows us that perseverance is motivated by love for others and trust in God's ultimate purposes.
Wisdom also recognizes that perseverance is easier when we're surrounded by supportive community. The writer of Hebrews mentions the "cloud of witnesses" who encourage us in our journey. We need people who believe in us, pray for us, and remind us of our calling when we're tempted to give up.
Prayer:
Jesus, help us run our race with perseverance, keeping our eyes fixed on You. Give us wisdom to endure difficulties and strength to finish well. Surround us with encouraging community. Amen.
