When the Hurt You Buried Starts Running Your Life
“Search me, O God, and know my heart.” - Psalm 139:23
There are moments in life that wound us deeply, and instead of dealing with the pain, we bury it. We push it down, hoping it will fade. We distract ourselves. We stay busy. We convince ourselves that ignoring it is the same as healing it. But buried hurt does not stay buried. It eventually finds a way to lead your decisions, shape your reactions, and influence relationships you care about.
You can see this play out in small but telling ways. Someone says something simple, and your reaction is stronger than the moment deserves. A situation reminds you of something from years ago, and suddenly your heart tightens. You find yourself repeating patterns you promised you would never fall back into. These moments are not random. They are signs that old hurt is running the show from the background.
When pain is suppressed, it becomes a quiet director in your life. It shapes the tone of your conversations. It affects how close you let people get. It makes you defensive when someone is simply trying to understand you. It causes you to withdraw when connection is exactly what your heart needs. That old hurt begins to guide your choices without your permission.
God does not expose buried pain to shame you. He reveals it to free you. When David prayed this verse, he was inviting God to show him whatever was hiding in his heart. He understood that anything left untouched would eventually influence the direction of his life. Healing starts when you allow God to show you what you have been avoiding. Not so you can relive the pain, but so you can finally release it.
If you sense that something buried is shaping your reactions, talk to God about it today. Tell Him what you pushed down. Tell Him what still lingers. Allow Him to help you heal what has been leading you. You do not have to keep living under the influence of old wounds. God is ready to restore what hurt tried to control.
