Getting Your “But” Out of the Way
“For nothing will be impossible with God.” - Luke 1:37
When you look through Scripture, you find a pattern that shows up in almost every story. God speaks, invites, and calls. And people respond with faith that sounds confident at first, but then comes the word that stops everything. The word but. It is one small word that has kept many people from seeing what God was trying to show them. It is often the word that sits between God’s promise and our obedience.
If you listen closely to your own thoughts, you may hear it too. God says He will provide, but you say you are not sure it will work out. God says He will guide you, but you say you do not know which step to take. God says He can heal what broke you, but you say you have been hurt too long. That little word becomes the barrier that blocks your view of God’s power.
Most of the time, the but is rooted in fear or insecurity. Sometimes it comes from past disappointments that still feel fresh. Other times, it comes from a belief that God can do great things for everyone else, but not for you. Whatever the reason, the but stands in the way of the clarity God wants to give you. It becomes the filter that distorts the truth of what He is trying to reveal.
Something begins to shift when you learn to move that but out of the way. When you stop interrupting God’s word with your fear, you start to see Him more clearly. When you stop leading with excuses, you begin to notice how present God already is. When you stop telling God why it will not happen, you start to trust Him for what He can do.
This is not about ignoring your feelings. It is about refusing to let those feelings cancel the voice of God. Your but may feel powerful, but it is not stronger than the God who made you. Every time you catch yourself saying but after God speaks, pause and remind yourself that His word is not limited by what scares you.
Today is a good day to let God speak without interruption. Let Him remind you of who He is. Let Him show you that His promise is bigger than your doubt. When you move your but out of the way, you make room to finally see God clearly.
