Step Into the Deep
"For he was astonished, and all who were with him, at the catch of fish that they had taken" - Luke 5:9
There is a moment in Luke 5 when Jesus tells Peter to launch out into the deep and let down his nets for a catch. Peter is hesitant. He explains that they’ve worked all night and caught nothing. From a fisherman’s perspective, the timing is off, the location is questionable, and the command doesn’t make much sense. But Peter takes the step anyway. He moves off the shore and into deeper water. What happens next shocks him. A miraculous catch so overwhelming it nearly sinks the boat.
This story isn’t just about fish. It’s about what happens when you stop playing it safe on the shore. We often sit in the shallow end of life because it’s comfortable and predictable. We stay close to what we know, where our feet can touch the bottom. But sometimes God is trying to take you deeper, and you are still sitting on the shore waiting for certainty. You want all the variables resolved, all the outcomes guaranteed, all the fears settled. But faith does not wait for certainty. Faith moves at God’s word.
God is calling you to deeper trust, deeper purpose, deeper intimacy with Him. But the deep is risky. The deep is unfamiliar. The deep requires letting go of what you control. Still, that is where the miraculous happens. That is where God reveals His power and multiplies what you surrendered. As long as you stay near the shore, you will always wonder what God could have done if you had just trusted Him more.
What if the breakthrough is not back on land but out in the water? What if the thing you’ve been praying for requires a step into the unknown? God does not promise you certainty. He promises you His presence. And if He is the one calling you deeper, you can trust that the water will hold.
Do not sit on the edge of your calling waiting for a sign that feels safe. God is already speaking. The deep is waiting. Will you go?
