Who Are You in the Dark?
"But the Lord said to Samuel, 'Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.'" – 1 Samuel 16:7
It is easy to look the part. To say the right things, post the right words, and keep up appearances in front of people. But who are you when the crowd is gone? Who are you when the doors are closed and no one else is around? That version of you is the one that matters most.
The decisions you make in the dark are what shape who you really are. That’s where your character is formed. That’s where discipline is built. That’s where your heart gets tested. If you want to be someone who consistently makes the right choices when others are watching, it starts by making the right choices when no one is.
It’s not about being perfect. It’s about being honest. Are you guarding your eyes and ears when no one else is holding you accountable? Are you choosing integrity when temptation feels stronger than truth? Are you spending time with God because you want to know Him, or only when you need something from Him?
These unseen moments are the foundation for everything else. You will never rise to the occasion in public if you’ve been crumbling in private. Public strength is always built in private surrender.
Ask yourself today, who are you in the quiet? Who are you when the pressure is low and the stakes seem small? That’s the version of you that God sees clearly, and that’s the version He wants to transform.
Because the deeper your foundation, the higher your life can rise. And the more consistent your decisions are in the dark, the more powerful your witness becomes in the light. Start where no one sees, and God will honor you where everyone does.
