Do Not Pick and Choose
"But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves." - James 1:22
One of the easiest traps to fall into when reading Scripture is selective application. It happens when we take the parts we like or that fit our views and ignore the rest. But when we do that, we miss the heart of God’s message and risk hurting others along the way.
In Matthew 5, Jesus makes it clear that He did not come to abolish the Law. He came to fulfill it. But over time, people have often twisted or ignored that context to fit their own agendas. This is not just an old problem. It happens today as people use Scripture or even science to push biases instead of truth.
We see an example of selective application in John 8 when religious leaders dragged a woman caught in adultery before Jesus. They were quick to apply the law to her, but ignored the fact that the man involved was nowhere to be found. They were not looking for justice or truth. They were using the law to shame and trap.
The challenge for you and me is this. Are we reading God’s Word to be transformed or to prove a point? Are we using it to deepen our love and obedience to God or just to justify our opinions and actions?
Selective faith is not real faith. It is easy to quote verses about grace when we need forgiveness but forget about grace when we need to offer it to someone else. It is easy to hold others to a standard we do not hold for ourselves.
God calls us to a better way. He invites us to take all of His Word seriously, even the parts that challenge us or stretch us. That is how we grow. That is how we reflect His heart to the world.
Where are you picking and choosing what parts of God’s Word to apply? Where do you need to let His truth confront your attitudes or actions? When you let Scripture shape all of you, not just the parts you are comfortable with, you will discover a deeper walk with God and a more powerful witness to others.
