Managing What's Inside
"Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life." - Proverbs 4:23
Have you ever seen the movie Inside Out? It’s a story about a young girl named Riley, whose emotions struggle to adjust after her family moves across the country. The film shows us how Riley deals with leaving her old friends behind, making new ones, and navigating the challenges of growing up. But what makes the movie really special is its focus on what’s happening inside Riley’s mind, the emotional battle for control over how she will react to all these changes.
Inside Out gives us a powerful picture of what we experience in life. The movie shows that if you can manage what’s happening inside of you, you can handle what’s happening around you. This is true for all of us, especially when we face challenges that disrupt our peace or throw us off balance. But managing our emotions isn’t easy, is it? One minute you’re calm, and the next, anger, frustration, or sadness can take over.
God wants us to find a way to have emotional health and balance, and He’s given us the Holy Spirit to help us with that. Through the Spirit, we can manage our emotions, rather than letting them control us. Notice that the goal isn’t to master our emotions but to learn how to handle them in a way that honors God. When we allow the Spirit to lead us, He helps us respond with patience instead of anger, with kindness instead of frustration, and with peace instead of worry.
Like Riley, we all face situations that test our emotions, whether it’s a major life change, difficult relationships, or just the pressures of everyday life. But God is doing a work in us, transforming us from the inside out. His plan for us doesn’t stop when we give our lives to Christ, it’s just the beginning. He’s continually working on our hearts, attitudes, and behaviors so that we reflect more of His character.
So, the next time you feel your emotions spiraling out of control, remember that you don’t have to navigate them alone. The Holy Spirit is with you, ready to guide your heart and help you find balance, no matter what life throws your way. Trust Him to do the work in you—from the inside out.
