Normalizing the Conversation
"For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control." - 2 Timothy 1:7
Sex is not dirty or demonic. It’s a gift from God, designed to be part of the beautiful, sacred, and holy experience of being human. Yet, the discomfort many of us feel around this topic has led to a culture where sex is often discussed only in hushed tones or hidden in less-than-ideal places. It’s time to change that narrative and embrace sex as a natural, God-given part of our humanity.
Let’s start by normalizing the conversation. To truly honor what God created, we need to be comfortable talking about it openly and respectfully. Why should this topic be confined to seedy websites, sensational magazines, or graphic music? Instead, we should approach discussions about sex with a blend of science, research, compassion, and Scripture, rather than letting fear and biases shape our views.
Parents, it’s important to talk to your kids about sex. If you’re unsure how to start, that’s okay. Be transparent about your uncertainty and share what you know honestly. Your openness can create a safe space for your children to learn and ask questions, helping them develop a healthy understanding of their sexuality.
Couples, make time for open and healthy conversations about sex. If past experiences are affecting your present, seeking counseling or therapy can provide support and clarity. Addressing these issues openly can strengthen your relationship and help both partners grow.
We also should not ignore sexual trauma. The inability to discuss sex openly can contribute to a culture of silence surrounding abuse and molestation. If you’ve experienced trauma, addressing it rather than sweeping it under the rug is crucial for healing and for how you relate to yourself and others.
I share this message not to provoke but to address a gap that affects many of us. I remember growing up in church and encountering topics that were shrouded in secrecy and shame. I don’t want to perpetuate that same cycle of silence for future generations.
Let’s move towards a place where we openly communicate about sex and other sensitive topics, creating a community where everyone can engage with their whole selves in a healthy and loving way.
