Standing on God's Promises
"The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged." - Deuteronomy 31:8
After 430 years of bondage in Egypt and 40 years of wandering in the wilderness, the Israelites were on the brink of entering the land that God had promised them. It was a new season, filled with new challenges, new opportunities, and a new leader”Joshua. Moses, who had led the first generation out of Egypt and mediated the covenant at Mount Sinai, had passed away. But even though Moses was gone, the promises God made to His people did not die in the wilderness.
God appointed Joshua to lead the second generation of Israelites into the land of purpose, the land He had promised to their forefather Abraham over 400 years earlier. These opening verses in Joshua remind us of God's unchanging nature as a covenant keeper. God reassured His people that the promises He made long ago were still valid, and they could stand on them, no matter how much time had passed or what they had endured.
Maybe you're in a season where you feel like you've been wandering for a long time. Perhaps life has thrown you unexpected challenges, and you're facing uncertainty, doubt, or discouragement. But just as God reminded the Israelites of His promises, He is reminding you today. The promises He made to bless you, to heal you, to lift you up, and to bring you into your purpose are still true. You can stand on them.
Life may have knocked you down, relationships may have failed, dreams may have been deferred, and people you trusted may have walked out on you. But God's promises remain steadfast. He is with you in this season of uncertainty. He is with you when you can't see the way forward. He is with you when you can't keep yourself. And He will never leave you nor forsake you.
When you feel overwhelmed, remember that God goes before you. He knows what lies ahead, and He has already made a way. Stand firm on His promises, trusting that what He has said will come to pass. Even when the road is hard, and the journey is long, you can rely on God's faithfulness. He will keep you, guide you, and fulfill His word in your life. Do not be afraid, and do not be discouraged. God is with you every step of the way.
