Authority And Ownership
"In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit." - Ephesians 1:13
When God seals us with the Holy Spirit, it signifies not only our authenticity but also our authority and ownership in Christ.
Firstly, the seal of the Holy Spirit signifies authority. In ancient times, a king's seal on a decree made it unalterable and enforceable. Similarly, when God seals us with His Spirit, He grants us authority that transcends our own capabilities. Like a police officer, whose badge gives them the authority to enforce the law despite their physical stature, the Holy Spirit empowers us to boldly witness for the Lord, preach the Gospel, and serve Him with confidence. This authority doesn't come from our own strength but from the indwelling Spirit who empowers us to fulfill God's purposes in our lives.
Secondly, the seal signifies ownership. In historical contexts, a seal indicated absolute ownership. When God seals us with His Spirit, He marks us as His own possession. We no longer belong to ourselves; we belong to God. Just as Jeremiah purchased a piece of land marked with a seal to declare his ownership, the Holy Spirit marks us as belonging wholly to God. This declaration of ownership assures us of God's protection and care over our lives.
Sadly, misunderstandings about the Holy Spirit sometimes lead to confusion or discomfort among Christians. Some teachings suggest that receiving the Holy Spirit is a subsequent act after salvation, requiring specific rituals or experiences. However, Ephesians 1:13 clarifies that we are sealed with the Holy Spirit at the moment of believing in Christ. It's not a future event or a second grace but a present reality for every believer in Jesus Christ.
Therefore, as sealed saints of God, let us boldly declare, "Thank God I'm sealed!" We are authenticated, empowered with authority, and owned by God Himself.
