Becoming the Change
"Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose." - Philippians 2:12-13
Have you ever noticed the transformative nature of salt? When added to food or applied in various situations, salt becomes nearly invisible, yet it quietly exerts its influence, bringing about change. In a similar vein, Jesus imparts a profound lesson about change, emphasizing the importance of embodying the change we seek to bring.
Gandhi famously said, "Be the change you wish to see in the world." This sentiment encapsulates the essence of what Jesus teaches us. To be agents of change, we must first undergo transformation ourselves. This transformation is not merely external but begins with the inward work of sanctification.
When we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, we receive the gift of salvation, graciously bestowed upon us through His sacrifice on the cross. However, salvation is only the beginning. The second work of the Holy Spirit is sanctification, the ongoing process of God transforming us to align with the will of Christ.
Sanctification is a journey of becoming more like Christ in character and conduct. It requires a willingness to surrender our old ways and allow God to renew our hearts and minds. As we yield to the Holy Spirit's work within us, we gradually shed our old selves and take on the likeness of Christ.
This process of sanctification is not always easy. It requires humility, obedience, and a deep commitment to following Christ. Yet, it is through this transformation that we truly become the change agents God calls us to be. Our lives, infused with the love and power of Christ, become a beacon of hope and transformation to those around us.
As we strive to bring about change in our world, let us first allow God to change us from within. Let us embrace the journey of sanctification, trusting that God is at work in us, shaping us according to His good purpose. And as we become more like Christ, we will naturally radiate His love and bring about lasting change in the world.
