Pursuing Holiness
"Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, bringing holiness to completion in the fear of God." - 2 Corinthians 7:1
The apostle Paul's message to the Corinthians in 2 Corinthians 7:1 centers on the pursuit of holiness. As believers, we are called to live lives that reflect the holiness of God. Let's explore what this means for us.
Paul begins by addressing his readers as "beloved," emphasizing the loving relationship between God and His people. He reminds us that we have been given great promises. These promises are rooted in God's covenant love, which assures us of His presence, provision, and salvation.
In response to God's promises, we are called to take action: "Let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit" (2 Corinthians 7:1). Holiness is about consecrating every aspect of our lives to God. It's not limited to our spiritual nature but extends to our bodies, actions, and choices.
The process of cleansing is ongoing. It's not a one-time event but a journey. We are continually challenged to remove the impurities, sins, and attitudes that hinder our holiness. It's a process of daily surrender to God, relying on His grace to transform us.
Bringing holiness "to completion" is a lifelong pursuit. God's desire is for us to become more like Christ with each passing day. He is the author and finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:2), and as we walk in the fear of God, He guides us toward completeness.
The "fear of God" doesn't imply a paralyzing dread of Him but rather a deep reverence and awe. It's an acknowledgment of His holiness, authority, and the supreme worthiness of His promises. We walk in the fear of God with the understanding that His ways are higher and His wisdom is perfect.
The call to pursue holiness is based on God's promises and His unfailing love. As beloved children of God, we are invited to cleanse ourselves, body and spirit, in an ongoing journey toward completeness in holiness. This journey is marked by daily surrender, reliance on God's grace, and a deep reverence for His ways. In our pursuit of holiness, we discover the beauty of living in alignment with the God who keeps His promises and empowers us to become more like Him each day.
