The Back Burner
“When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.” - Matthew 2:3-4
In the stories of Jesus’ birth told by Luke and Matthew, there are three categories of people who missed the opportunity to receive Jesus. Over the next three days, we are going to dive deeper into each of these categories.
King Herod is the first person who missed Jesus. He was a member of the influential Herodian family who tried to trick the wise men so he could find out the whereabouts of Jesus so to kill him.
Being raised in a Hellenistic, somewhat Jewish home, he always had something to prove – to his community, to himself, and to those in power. I think Herod believed in the idea of the Messiah. The problem was whether he felt he had some other things that were just more important at the time.
He believed in the Messiah but had Jesus on the back burner. And the truth is, there is someone reading this right now who knows about Jesus, but you have him on the back burner.
You grew up in church or around the church. You know it’s important to live for God, but you’re casual about your faith. Faith in God isn’t a priority right now. It’s not that you don’t plan to get around to it. It’s just that there are other things that are more important to you now.
None of us are promised tomorrow. You never know when it will be too late. We say we will get around to it, but if not now, then when?
It’s time to take Jesus off the back burner and make Him a priority in your life, TODAY.
