A Spiritual Advisor
“Plans go wrong for lack of advice; many advisers bring success.” - Proverbs 15:22
There will never be a substitute for the Word of God and prayer. Listening and talking to God straight on will always be the best thing we can do for our spiritual lives and relationship with Christ.
But sometimes, we struggle to hear from God or to interpret what He is saying to us. In this case, it might be time to seek outside counsel. Over the next three days, we are going to look at three important types of people we need in our lives.
God does not intend for us to do life alone. In fact, Proverbs 15:22 says, “Plans go wrong for lack of advice; many advisers bring success.” And so, we need these “specialists” or “advisors” in our lives.
The first specialist we need is a spiritual advisor. This could be a pastor, minister, spiritual director, or mentor. This should be someone challenging us to seek God, search Scripture, and provide us with godly wisdom.
A spiritual advisor should always be encouraging us to grow in our faith, not allowing us to stay stagnate or grow complacent. God desires our faith to grow, and a spiritual advisor should push us toward that growth.
They should also encourage us to search Scripture. While they might have great advice on what we should do, no advice is greater than God’s. A spiritual advisor should never be a substitute for going to the Word. A good spiritual advisor will know they cannot replace the Word of God and will encourage you to seek the scripture.
Then, when needed, they should be someone who can give godly wisdom. A spiritual advisor should be someone who has been through many life experiences themselves and can speak to you from a place of wisdom. They themselves are spiritually mature and have grown in faith, and now they are encouraging you to do the same.
If you want to grow in your walk with God, it starts with a direct connection to the Lord. But that does not mean you shouldn’t have others around you that encourage your walk with Christ. One of those people is a spiritual advisor. If you do not currently have one, I would encourage you to find someone you trust to help walk along with you as you navigate this world from a godly perspective.
