Refocus Your Attention
“The name of the Lord is a strong fortress; the godly run to Him and are safe.” - Proverbs 18:10
Over the next few days, we are going to look at how you can overcome those times in your life when you just can’t seem to find the closure you are looking for. Perhaps one chapter in your life has just ended abruptly, and though you might not be ready to move on, that chapter is over. That doesn’t mean you should get discouraged. Instead, find comfort in the fact that it is time to write a new chapter!
But just how can you do that? How can you write a new chapter when you are having a hard time closing the last one? It starts by refocusing your attention. The author of Psalm 75 speaks to the absence of clear closure and understanding. He says, “and we will keep Your name close.”
After focusing on his enemies in Psalm 73-74, the psalmist reaches a point wherein he stops rehearsing what his enemies have done to him, and he shifts his focus on what God can do for him. He realizes that in order to move forward into his next season, his focus can’t be on what happened in his last season.
Proverbs 18:10 reminds us of what happens when we refocus our attention on God; “The name of the Lord is a strong fortress; the godly run to Him and are safe.” The psalmist in Psalm 75 is saying, rather than my focus being on that which is unpredictable and doubtful, I am going to focus on that in which I can be confident, and that is the name of the Lord.
If you want to move on in the midst of uncertainty when access to closure just isn’t an option, you need to refocus your attention. You cannot move to the next season of life when your focus is on what happened in the last season. The only way to move forward is to focus on the One who holds your future!
