The Lord Needs It
“So they went and found the colt, just as Jesus had said. And sure enough, as they were untying it, the owners asked them, ‘Why are you untying that colt?’ And the disciples simply replied, ‘The Lord needs it.’” - Luke 19:32-34
Luke 19 tells the story of Jesus riding into Jerusalem on a colt (also known as a young, male horse or donkey). While this story has been preached countless times, most pastors usually do not mention anything about the owners of the animal.
It is interesting because the owners are perhaps the most important figures in the story; without their willingness to avail their resources to Jesus, we wouldn’t have one of the most important stories in the Gospels.
As our Lord was about to make what we now call His triumphant entrance into the city of Jerusalem at the beginning of the week in which He would ultimately die on Calvary’s cross, these unnamed figures have remained largely in anonymity for over two thousand years.
Luke tells us about their presence and their participation in the unfolding of God’s plan of salvation. And Luke records that when these people ask the disciples why they were untying this colt, they tell the owners, The Lord needs it.” It is an amazing account of obedience.
This story happened because of the faithfulness of the donkey’s owners. They are not the most visible protagonists in the text, but their significance is immeasurable. Similar to the owners, God just might be calling you to do something big to advance His kingdom.
God can use anyone. You don’t have to be the one on the stage, the one with the title behind or in front of your name; you don’t have to be the most gifted or the smartest. You might not get the recognition or the attention, but that is not why we do it. We do it because the Lord needs it!
