Move The Heart of God
“Then the men turned away and went toward Sodom, but Abraham remained standing before the Lord. Then Abraham approached him and said: ‘Will you sweep away the righteous with the wicked?’” - Genesis 18:22-23
Genesis 18 gives us a dialogue between a desperate man and a determined God concerning the fate of a community that departed from God’s will and God’s way. God revealed His plans to destroy the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, and Abraham is concerned because his nephew, Lot, and his family are living in that city.
Rather than conceding his family’s fate to the circumstance and the situation around him, Abraham prays, looking for a way to save them. The news of God’s intentions seizes this 99-year-old man and brings him to his knees before God. It is a marvelous picture of what happens when believers go to God in prayer.
In this prayer, Abraham makes an audacious appeal to God to save his nephew Lot and his family. In the process, he models for us what happens when you walk with God in faith and live in His power. It shows how we can gain access to the throne room of heaven to ask what we will of the Lord in prayer.
In this prayer, Abraham petitions God to agree to save the cities if there can be found some righteous individuals who worship God; first 50, then 45, 40, 30, 20, and finally, 10. God agrees that if He finds a remnant of 10 righteous individuals, He will save the cities.
God is so moved by Abraham’s prayer that it moves the heart of God, and consequently, we discover in this exchange how we too can pray prayers that can also move the heart of God. Over the next few days, we will be discussing exactly what Abraham did when he came before the Lord because you too can move the heart of God through the great gift of prayer!
