Surrounded By God’s Protection
“For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.” - Psalm 91:11-12
When you are facing an attack, you not only are surrounded by God’s promises and God’s peace but also by God’s protection. Psalms 125 shows us this through a song. This psalm is considered a pilgrim song. The pilgrims would sing these songs on their journey to prepare their spirits for worship as well as to prepare their minds for the long dangerous trek up ahead.
The road to Jerusalem could be very dangerous. As reflected in the parable of the Good Samaritan, the road from Jericho to Jerusalem was often populated with robbers who would accost people on their way to worship. Consequently, pilgrims would sing this song in preparation for worship, but also as a prayer to ask the Lord for covering and protection.
As they enter the city, they will notice that the city is surrounded by mountains. That is why the psalmist says in verse 2, “As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds his people…” On the east side of the city there was the Mount of Olives, on the south, the Hill of Evil Council, on the west, the ridge beyond the valley of Jehoshaphat, and on the north, the high ground of Scopas.
If the city was attacked, the invaders would have to march through dangerous mountain rangers that protected the city. The psalmist says that as these mountains surround Jerusalem for protection, so the Lord surrounds and protects His people.
Whenever Satan attacks the believer, he must go through God first who is our protector. God is a God of protection. In a world that is dangerous, unsafe by day and by night, the Lord protects us from things we’re aware of and of things we are not. And while we try our best to avoid catastrophe, violence, and pain, the fact remains that in life we will have tribulations.
But do not fear and do not be dismayed because we are safe in the Master’s arms. It may look like we are surrounded by problems on every side, but we are in fact surrounded by God’s promises, God’s peace, and God’s protection.
