Constant Comparison Disorder
“Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else.” - Galatians 6:4-6
Comparison can breed discontentment and ingratitude if we are not careful. I once heard a story about a woman who had a difficult pregnancy and gave birth at 32 weeks. Her baby was healthy, and she was proud of herself for making it through the pain of childbirth. However, when she saw another mother in the maternity wing who had just given birthed and looked like she could be America’s Next Top Model, she became discontent with herself because her body did not automatically snap back.
When your mind is focused on what you don’t have, you cannot truly appreciate what you do have. Here is a mother who just performed a miracle, and she was unhappy because she didn’t give herself a little grace after giving birth. And this mother is not alone.
We have all been in a situation where we were happy to have an item or opportunity until we saw what others possessed. The truth is, we don’t know how that person feels or what it took them to get to where they are. Sometimes, if we knew the truth, we wouldn’t desire the outcome as much.
God’s blessings are limitless. Your blessings are not limited by the blessings of others. And sometimes, what you think is a blessing from God is just a reward from Satan for disobeying God. That “blessing” will soon turn into blight.
Instead of focusing on what you do not have, take the time today to show gratitude for what you do have. And if you want to improve, say a prayer, and allow God to guide you to grow in the direction that He best deems appropriate.
