Fearing The Unknown
“Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” - Hebrews 12:2
The Bible speaks a lot about trusting God and on waiting for His timing because both of these commands can be challenging. One reason is because of the fear that is associated with trusting in the unknown.
In Genesis 15, when God spoke to Abram, He spoke a word that addressed what he and many of us struggle with when we’re waiting for God’s promise to come to pass. We become afraid. God addressed Abram’s fear. Keep in mind that Abram is now dwelling in an unfamiliar land. He has left his homeland to dwell in a place of God’s leading. While he has enjoyed great blessings for his obedience, he has also encountered some difficulties and made some enemies along the way.
God’s council to Abram to not be afraid suggests that fear is beginning to knock on the door of Abram’s heart. We all face doubts, fears, and uncertainties in life every now and then. Frustration with the passage of time gives way to fear when the situation we are facing becomes our focus over the Savior we serve.
This is why Hebrews 12:2 admonishes us to, “Fix our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.” Because when we take our eyes off Jesus and start looking at the circumstances, we become afraid.
Have you gotten caught up in your circumstances? Do you worry about what lies ahead? Waiting on God can be difficult. It can be even more difficult when we allow fear and doubt to creep in. Do not become fixated on your circumstance but fix your eyes on Jesus. He will perfect your faith and sustain you in the unknown.
