“Hope in the Lord and keep his way. He will exalt you to inherit the land; when the wicked are destroyed, you will see it.” - Psalm 37:34
Before Abram asked God about who would inherit his estate in Genesis 15, there were a series of challenging events Abram faced. Most notably, he was at war and fought to secure the return of his nephew, Lot. After this, he was in the valley of Shaveh, trying to figure out what was the next move. Scripture says, "After this, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: 'Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.'"
God knew what Abram needed, at the time he needed it, and He spoke a word to address his deepest frustrations. In order for that message to be planted in his heart, Abram had to remain open to God’s Word. The Bible teaches us that God is not a man that He should lie. God is a God who always keeps His promises.
This is why the prophet Isaiah said, “the grass withers, the flowers fade, but the Word of the Lord will stand forever.” Even though Abram had questions about where he was in life, he knew he had to continue trusting God’s Word.
Do you find yourself in the valley wondering what to do next? Stay open to the Word of God. He might appear in a vision or a dream, or he may give you a Word while you are reading and meditating on scripture.
As you wait on God, you have a choice. You can worry and wonder when He is going to do what He said He would do; or you can trust Him, knowing He will do exactly as He promised. You never know what message is awaiting. “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
