The Blessing Of Reward
In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. (Ephesians 1:11-12)
As we wrap up our list of five blessings from the Son of God, I want us to consider the blessing of reward. Look at verse 11 in today’s key passage, “In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will.” There is an inheritance that we receive from God the Son, an inheritance that God bestows upon us when we give ourselves to Christ.
As we’ve discussed the past few days, we receive redemption from the Son. We have been reconciled by the Son. We receive revelation into God’s will from the Son. And we have a responsibility to make the world better. But there’s a reward as well.
There’s a twofold implication of the language used here. Paul seems to say we have an inheritance from Christ, but we also have an inheritance for Christ. Our lives should model and mimic a life that is surrendered to Jesus Christ, while simultaneously anticipating the day that we will be rewarded for having put our trust in Christ. That’s what it means to “...live for the praise of His glory…”
In other words, you and I are, in fact, trophies or displays of God’s grace! Every day, we sit in the trophy case of God’s majesty for all the world to see. God’s love was demonstrated to us through Jesus Christ, as an expression of His amazing grace, which Paul says He poured out lavishly upon us; and because of that, He has already made preparations for our future and He has prepared a reward for us.
