All Things Are Possible
Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.” – Mark 10:27
For the past 43 years and over 9 blockbuster films, fans of Star Wars have been waiting to see how it would all end. Would the forces of good (the Jedi) win against the forces of evil, or would the bad guys prevail? But in “The Rise of Skywalker,” the final film in the franchise that came out last year, there is a battle scene that has meaning not just for cinematic history, but for salvation history as well. In it, the Jedi (the good guys) are faced with whether they should go into battle against the Sith (the bad guys) who are destroying planets, their people, and their way of life.
The problem is that the odds are against the Jedi; they are outnumbered, out resourced, and for a time outwilled. But at a critical moment, at a point when the Jedi are losing horribly in this last battle, their spaceships are being destroyed, their troops are being killed, and they are about to give up and throw in the towel, the Jedi decide to press on and to go forward into battle anyhow. They don’t have the weapons, they don’t have the wherewithal, and they seemingly don’t have the will, but they press on; they fight on, and they do what they are called and assigned to do.
Even though wisdom and battle strategy would dictate folding and going home, they move on and move forward anyhow. And when they do that, something surprising and exciting happens; they encounter a host of friendly ships and allies from another part of the galaxy that they didn’t even know about who help them defeat their enemies. Star Wars ends in victory for the Jedi because they have the faith enough, the strength enough, and the courage enough to go forward in battle without knowing whether they have a chance of winning.
I thought about that scene as I reflected on the journey of faith with God, and the way in which sometimes God calls us to embark upon new ventures and to explore new vistas without having a clear sense of what we will encounter, without knowing exactly how long it will take, or without knowing what we’ll have to go through along the way. And yet, we have to step out on faith and do what it is that we sense God is leading us to do, even when we are uncertain of what to expect and unclear what the outcome is going to be. If you find yourself in a seemingly hopeless situation today, I pray that you press on, remembering God is with you, and that even if your circumstances seem impossible to get through, all things are possible with Him by your side.
