Where Is Your Hope?
“But now, Lord, what do I look for? My hope is in you.” – Psalm 39:7
A pastor friend of mine once told me a story of him visiting one of his church members in the hospital. As he was on the elevator going to visit the member, he and a hospital worker started to make small talk. He speaks and she speaks back.
Out of curiosity, he asks her what she does in the hospital. She says “I am a heart specialist.” Then she says, “Let me put in in laymen's terms. I am the heart doctor, or cardiologist, they call when all the other cardiologists have failed.”
Then before he gets off the elevator she asks, “What do you do here?” He replies, “I don't work here.” She looks confused and says, “Well, what do you do?”
He responds, “Well, let me put it in laymen terms: You're the heart doctor they call when all the other heart doctors have failed. I work for the One they call when you have failed.”
As humans, we tend to put our hope in a lot of things. We hope in our jobs. We hope in our financial security. We hope in our health, or our ability to get healthcare when we need it. We hope in our family and friends. And while those are all wonderful resources the Lord has provided for us, those things and those people aren’t capable of holding our hope, for all of these things are only temporary. They can’t support us eternally. They can’t satisfy every need. And they aren’t guaranteed to last forever.
If you were to lose all of these things you’re hoping in, what are you left with? Well, if you’re a follower of Jesus, you always have your relationship with Him. Nothing and no one can take that away from you. Even if you lose your job and your finances, the Lord is still there and can still provide. Even if your health declines, He is with you and He is capable of healing you. Even if your family and friends pass away or walk away, your Heavenly Father won’t ever leave you alone. So, with that in mind, I pray that you will remember where your hope truly lies, not in the things and people of this world, but in the Creator of the world, your Father in heaven.
