A Servant’s Posture
Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their garments over it, and he sat on it.
Many in the crowd spread their garments on the road ahead of him, and others spread leafy branches they had cut in the fields. Jesus was in the center of the procession, and the people all around him were shouting, “Praise God! Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessings on the coming Kingdom of our ancestor David! Praise God in highest heaven!” (Mark 11:7-10)
Jesus made a very unconventional, counter-cultural choice when He decided to make His entrance into Jerusalem riding on a donkey. He told Hi disciples that if the owner asks what they are doing with the donkey, they are to tell him that the Lord has need of him. The donkey Jesus used was in service for Christ and in service to others. And perhaps that is the pathway to success.
Jesus told His disciples in Matthew 23:11, “that the greatest among you will be a servant.” How much more effective could we be if we viewed success through the prism of service?
Consider what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said: “Everybody can be great…because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”
I wonder how much more effective the church could be if more of us were committed to serving others rather than serving ourselves. Let us use this time of crisis our world is facing to serve those who are in need. Let’s call to check on our friends, family, and coworkers. Let’s lend a helping hand to those who need it. Let’s be a shoulder to cry on for those who are in pain. Let’s serve like Jesus did so that we may be a light amidst the darkness that is trying to overtake us.
