Facing Loss
At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship and said: “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised. (Job 1:20-21)
What would you do if you lost everything you had? If we’re being honest, many of us would probably stop going to church, stop reading the Word, and give up on God and everything else. Some of us would even give up on ourselves and on life all together. But Job gives us an example of what we can do when things don’t turn out the way we thought they would.
The life story of Job is a familiar one in Scripture. In summary, there was a day when Satan came before the Lord and said he could get Job to curse God if God would remove the hedge of protection from Job’s life. So the Lord agreed to let Satan test Job, with the exception that he couldn’t take Job’s life.
Satan did everything in his power to discourage Job and get him to curse the Lord. It got to the point where Job lost everything and everyone in his life except his life. When he came to this place of ultimate loss, instead of cursing God, Job began to worship the Lord. What an example!
We all know that life is painful. It’s a daily struggle to get through all of the tough parts of life, especially when it comes to getting through loss. Maybe you’ve lost a home, a car, money, or a significant relationship. If you were to take a brief inventory of your life, there are probably several things you could say you’ve lost over the years.
But even when we lose things and people that are important to us, we can’t turn our backs on God. We can walk away from the only sure thing we have in this life. Instead, we must follow the example of Job. We must continue to worship the Lord, trusting Him for our ultimate provision, even in the midst of loss.
