“In him we have…the forgiveness of our trespasses” - Ephesians 1:7
One of the most beautiful truths about our relationship with Jesus is that we are not only redeemed, we are also reconciled. Redemption paid the debt. Reconciliation restored the relationship. Paul says that in Christ, we have the forgiveness of our trespasses. That means God not only saw the offense. He also made the first move to forgive it. He took what was broken between us and made it whole again.
When you reconcile your bank account, it means something is off. The math doesn’t add up. So you go line by line, trying to find the error. You don’t quit just because it’s messy. You dig in until the numbers match. That’s what Jesus did with us. Our lives didn’t match the holiness of God. There was a deficit. A gap. A disconnect. But rather than walk away from us, God came close. He came to fix it. Jesus reconciled us back to God by closing the gap we could never close on our own.
And it wasn’t cheap. Forgiveness cost Him everything. He didn’t just erase our debt. He absorbed it. That’s what Paul means when he talks about being forgiven “through his blood.” God didn’t look the other way or sweep sin under the rug. He paid for it in full. Your past is no longer counted against you because it’s already been counted on Jesus.
Romans 5:10 says, “While we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son.” In other words, God didn’t wait for you to get it all together. He reconciled you while you were still running in the wrong direction. That’s grace. That’s mercy. That’s love.
When you feel like you’re too far gone, when guilt whispers that you’re not worthy, remember that God already fixed the imbalance. He already accounted for every mistake. He already cleared the ledger. If Jesus has forgiven your trespasses, then you are not disqualified. You are not damaged goods. You are not outside the family. You have been reconciled. That’s a blessing worth remembering today.
