A Holistic View of Spirituality
“Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul.” - 3 John 1:2
In Western culture, we often separate our spirituality into different compartments—spirit, mind, and body—believing that what happens to the body doesn’t affect the spirit.
Historically, thinkers like Plato influenced the idea that the body is something to be ignored or even seen as sinful, while the spirit is the only thing that matters. This way of thinking has led many to disregard the importance of physical health, even though our bodies are the vessels through which we live our spiritual lives.
Yet the Bible teaches us a different perspective. God values the body so much that He gave Himself a body through Jesus Christ, and the Church is called the body of Christ. John, in his letter to Gaius, reminds us that our physical health and spiritual health are intertwined. He prays not only for Gaius’ spiritual prosperity but also for his physical well-being. If our bodies are not well, we cannot fully engage in the work God has called us to do.
Our bodies are not separate from our spirituality. They are the temples in which our spirits dwell. Taking care of our physical health centers around our desire to be able to serve God effectively. Just as we nurture our souls through prayer, worship, and the Word, we must also be mindful of the health of our bodies. If we neglect our physical well-being, we limit our ability to carry out God's purpose in our lives.
Remember today that the health of your body is as important as the health of your soul. Take care of it, honor it, and keep it strong, for it is the vessel that carries out the work God has for you.
