Let Your Yes Be Yes
"Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil." – Matthew 5:37
In a world full of empty promises, God calls His people to be different. Words are not meant to be tossed around carelessly. They carry weight, and when we speak, we are accountable for what we say. Being a person who keeps their word is not just about good manners; it is about integrity.
When you tell someone you will do something, follow through. It is better to say nothing at all than to make a promise you never intend to keep. Jesus’ words in Matthew remind us that our “yes” should mean yes, and our “no” should mean no. People should not have to wonder if you will do what you said. They should know you are reliable because your track record speaks for itself.
Keeping your word is not only about commitments to others. It is also about the promises you make to yourself. How many times have you said you would start something, quit something, or be more consistent in something, only to let it slide after a few days? When you break promises to yourself, you train your own heart not to trust your word.
God Himself is the ultimate example of faithfulness. Scripture says He is not a man that He should lie. His promises are true, and He always does what He says He will do. When we keep our word, we reflect His character to the world.
If you want to grow in trust with others, start with your words. Speak less, mean what you say, and follow through on your commitments. Let people see in you someone whose words are not just noise but truth backed by action. Your “yes” should be so trustworthy that it requires no explanation.
