How To Be A Church Girl

Based on today’s text, I want to suggest that Gomer models for us what it means to be a church girl. She is a strong, beautiful woman who didn’t let society, men and institutional religion put constraints and limitations on how to live her life. That’s what it means to be a church girl. Church girls have a voice and use it, even if it makes others uncomfortable when they see your strength. This sermon is about who gets to define what it means to be a church girl. And Gomer shows us that a church girl avoids the trap of letting the patriarchal views of men, the ecclesiastical views of institutional religion, and the sexist views of society delimit her options and silence her voice.
