Proclaiming With Your Life

"Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven." - Matthew 5:16

The most powerful sermon most people will ever hear is not preached from a pulpit. It is watched, over years, in the life of someone they know.

Not a perfect life. Nobody is convinced by perfect. Perfect keeps people at a distance because it offers them nothing they can reach. What changes people is a life oriented toward love, justice, and compassion so consistently that it starts raising questions.

Think about who shaped your own faith. It was probably not the most eloquent person you have met. It was probably someone whose life made you curious.

Maybe it was a grandmother who prayed out loud in the kitchen. A teacher who treated every student as though they mattered equally. A neighbor who showed up with a casserole the week your family fell apart. None of them were trying to be examples. That is exactly why they were.

So consider what proclamation actually looks like on an ordinary Tuesday.

When you advocate for a coworker who is being treated unfairly, and you do it in the meeting rather than in the parking lot afterward, that is proclamation. When you give generously to someone who cannot pay you back and never mention it again, that is proclamation. When you sit with someone in grief without trying to fix it. When you speak up for the person everyone else is talking over. When you choose integrity in a situation where nobody would have known the difference. All of it is proclamation.

Notice the kind of light Jesus is describing. It is not a spotlight you aim at yourself. It is not a performance of goodness, which people can spot instantly and which repels them every time. It is the natural glow of a life being lived in genuine alignment with God's values.

And notice where the glory goes. They see your good works, Jesus says, and they give glory to your Father in heaven. That is the test. If the attention stops with you, the light was pointed the wrong way.

There is real freedom in this. You are not responsible for being impressive. You are responsible for being consistent. The light is not something you generate. It is something you stop hiding.

Here is a hard but valuable step. Ask someone who knows you well and will tell you the truth: does my life reflect the values I say I believe? Then be quiet and let them answer all the way to the end without defending yourself.

Your life is already preaching something. Make sure it is the gospel!

Prayer:
Lord, let our lives be a proclamation of your love, not for our own glory but for yours. Make us consistent when nobody is watching and humble when somebody is. Shine through us. Amen.
