“No one from the east or the west or from the desert can exalt themselves. It is God who judges; He brings one down, he exalts another…As for me, I will declare this forever; I will sing praise to the God of Jacob, who says, ‘I will cut off the horns of all the wicked, but the horns of the righteous will be lifted up.’” (Psalm 75:6-7, 9-10)
One of the greatest tragedies we can face in life is being stuck in the past when God has plans for our future. Too many of us live under the false assumption that the people, places, and circumstances of yesterday somehow have the power to determine the trajectory of tomorrow. But nothing could be further from the truth.
Psalm 75 makes it very clear that God is the only one who determines your future. The weight of your destiny is dependent on Him alone. Just because you have been hurt, abandoned, betrayed, lied to, or forgotten in the past does not mean there is no hope for you moving forward.
Think about the Israelites. It would have been so easy for them to have given up on their journey to the promised land under the weight of their captivity. They could have bought into the lie that their future was doomed by their present circumstance. But instead, they kept going. They held tight to the promise God had given them, and they eventually made it to the land He had promised them.
Are you stuck dwelling on the hurtful, scarring circumstances of your past? Are you having trouble being hopeful that the Lord could have a better future in store for you? If that’s you, be encouraged today that your past does not define you. Only God determines your future. My prayer is that you choose to cling to that truth today and move forward in hopeful of anticipation of what He has in store for you.
