Paul spent five and a half years in jail, and he used that experience as he wrote most of the New Testament to compare what life is like when you are living your life without God in it. Without Christ, we are trapped by Satan, imprisoned by the world, and chained to our passions that lead us on a path of unfulfillment and destruction. So he tells the believers in our key text that once you’ve been set free from the yoke and bondage of sin, you can’t allow yourself to be chained to and shackled by the very thing that used to hold you down.
