Take Your Knee Off Our Neck

The book of Micah was written to the people of God whose kingdom had been divided. Their civil rights had been violated, and their hopes had been extinguished by the Assyrians. The Assyrians used violence and military force on God’s people, and therefore oppressed them socially, politically, and economically. In the face of this unrest, Micah instructed the people on what the Lord wanted from them in times such as this. Micah declared that the Lord required three things–justice, mercy, and humility–as necessary responses in perilous times. We can take this same advice today as we each face our own struggles and trials. For the Lord has not changed what He requires of His people. Rather, He wants us now, just like He wanted His people back then, to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with Him.
